I loved The Alpine '89 shows, they were some of the most fun I have had!! There are 2 other 3-show runs that I saw that I, would personally rate higher:
9-81 Greek Theater
9-82 Red Rocks

Some other personal favorite runs:
7-78 Red Rocks (2 shows)
10-79 Cape Cod Coliseum (2 shows)
10/31 to 11/2, 1979 Nassau Coliseum (3 shows)
New Years 1981 (5 Shows)
Oct 82 Frost Amphitheater (2)
Sept 83 Santa Fe Downs (2)
Of course there are many others and this list is totally subjective, But these are among my favorites.

Some would say I'm an old timer, though at 16 I was younger than most (so it seemed) of the Fillmore West audience in 1970.

Downhill from here...

I saw the GD at least 20 times since 1970, including the wall of sound debut at the Cow Palace in 1974, free Golden Gate Park gig with the Starship in 1975, several times in the later '70s, early and late '80s, and finally the free gig in the Park with John Fogerty (1991).

Only once or twice during all those years was I inspired to attend more than one night in a run.
the June 4-7 1970 Fillmore West... and the August run at the FW.

The June rune sticks in my mind as the better or best I ever saw.
The New Riders, featuring Jerry center stage on pedal steel, helped make those nights memorable;

though surviving tapes run short or fall short...
Nevertheless, the sound and performances of that run remain my personal favorites of GD gigs I attended.

Again, what exists is in parts excellent and in part patchy.

Check em out, though what survives probably won't convert lovers of the '89 Alpine run.
If I could bring ya all back there to that '70 run, to really see why I feel the way I feel...
because the tapes are a mess and will never be like being there...
as is often the case with primal Dead...

until we get those akashic records sorted out.
